Not willing to work within the confines of the canvas, she creates her “out of the box” artwork by attaching plasma cut, welded & patina metal bits.
Biography
Kena was born in Penticton in 1952, Living in the Okanagan most of her life, she attended the Fine arts program & taught Batik classes at Okanagan College. At the same time she ran a successful boutique, "Artwear Okanagan" with 4 other artisans. After a 15 year hiatus from the art scence, she & husband,Lawrence moved back to Penticton where she has been able to pursue her passion for art once again.
Kena has traded in her wax, dyes & fabric for mild steel, canvas & acrylics. Sharing the metal shop with her husband, the metal bits are plasma cut, welded & torched creating a patina. They are then attached to the wooden frame, often spilling out over the borders of the canvas. A fascination with the relationship of shaps is evidenced in her textural & colourful "Wallart". A light hearted whimsical approach is what she wishes to express.
Kena’s art has been displayed at The Art Ark, Hambleton Galleries, of Kelowna, & The Penticton Art Gallery, plus many other group & solo shows. Most currently you will find her artwork at the Van Dop Galleries, New Westminster & SOPA Fine Arts, Kelowna. Regularly at Giardino, The Bench Artisan Market, Red Rooster Gallery, all of Penticton & their home gallery/sculpture garden. Her work can be found in collections throughout Canada, USA, Australia, Mexico & Switzerland.
