Ruth Hughes

Dave Nicholas

I have always enjoyed creating with my hands and for the past 35 years have been fascinated with clay. I am very interested in hand building, creating unique pieces such as masks, fish and roosters.

When I start a piece, I do not have a preconceived idea- the piece seems to come to life on its own and tells me what to do. I finish my work with a Raku glaze.

Mostly self-taught , I have taken workshops from Jay Cryderman, Laura Wee Lay Lag, Bob Kingsmill and others. My work has been displayed in galleries throughout the Okanagan Valley and the East Kootenays. Some of my works are featured in private collections in New Zealand, Sweden, Scotland and Japan.

I was fortunate to have been born and raised in Penticton and to be able to use some of the local clay in my work. I would like to thank the Red Rooster Winery for this opportunity to share my work with others.

ARTIST BIO

I have always been interested in working with clay. I joined the Penticton Potters Guild four years ago and am able from time to time to ‘play’ with clay. I enjoy handbuilding the most, as I feel you can be more creative and use your imagination. I like the excitement of ‘raku’ firing as you never know how your piece is going to come out.

I have lived in Penticton all my life and have raised three sons. I am fortunate to have a friend and teacher in Ruth Hughes. She is an experienced and talented potter and is mentoring me in the art of ‘clay’ and ‘raku’ firing.

Thank you to the Red Rooster who has given us the opportunity to display our ‘clay works’.

Janis Blyth

Janis was born in Victoria and attended art lessons, as a child, at the Victoria Art Gallery. Her love of art continued to flourish and she graduated, with honors, from the University of Victoria with a degree in Fine Arts. In 1982, Janis moved to Vancouver where she worked in retail clothing for many years. Janis’ long history in retail is greatly reflected in her canvasses. The dressing of a customer is similar to creating a character in her paintings.

Janis’ paintings incorporate all her experiences as well as her love of nature. They are rich in color and statement, often depicting women in humorous, and soulful reflection. Janis works mostly with acrylic on canvas, but sometimes she goes astray and paints one-of-a-kind painted objects.

Janis has displayed her work in many group and solo art shows. The City of North Vancouver has Janis’ artwork displayed in their City Hall, and the Centennial Theatre. In Vancouver, Janis’ work is displayed in the Vancouver Breast Cancer Foundation.
