Golden Egg 2011

"After many years of fascination with 'Rhone-style' reds, I decided to work with a couple of our passionate growers who are innovative, thirsty for knowledge, and enjoy a challenge.  We decided in 2007 to plant some Mourvedre, Syrah and Grenache vines in the heart of the Okanagan Valley.  In 2009 we harvested the grapes for the icon wine at Red Rooster called the 'Golden Egg'."

ABOUT THE WINE

"After many years of fascination with 'Rhone-style' reds, I decided to work with a couple of our passionate growers who are innovative, thirsty for knowledge, and enjoy a challenge.  We decided in 2007 to plant some Mourvedre, Syrah and Grenache vines in the heart of the Okanagan Valley.  In 2009 we harvested the grapes for the icon wine at Red Rooster called the 'Golden Egg'."                     Karen Gillis, Wine Maker.

For the 2010 vintage our winemaker has selected only one barrel of each of the three varietals in the Golden Egg (Mourvedre, Syrah, Grenache).  This top barrel selection and equal proportion of each grape has allowed the unique traits of each varietal to shine through .  Primary fermentation was done in open top stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation.  The Mourvedre and Grenache were aged in one year old French oak barrels and the Syrah was aged in American oak.  The wines were blended together after 12 months in oak barrels and then the final assemblage was aged a further 2 months before bottling.

Very limited production of 75 cases.

TASTING NOTES

This iconic rooster really expresses his 'Rhone-style' image with flare and panache while strutting through the hen house.  The clutch of hens immediately noticed that perfect shade of deep ruby red and enticing bouquet of raspberry and strawberry accented by notes of bay leaf and violet.  This dry, medium-bodied wine has soft delicate tannins and food-friendly acidity.  Flavours of red berry, cherry and plum provide that perfect tangy, juicy fruit-forward excitement while notes of red licorice and delicate spice add interest.  Red fruits, spice, mineral and plum notes provide that lasting memory.  Enjoy now through 2016.
