Even back in Switzerland, hens and roosters have played a major role in Prudence and Beats lives. They fondly held and raised the feathered animals for many years, having them as pets almost and enjoying the luxury of eating their own eggs. When they immigrated to Canada, one of their first aquisitions was of course another batch of chickens. Since the rooster is a very strong symbol all over the world:
- meaning good luck in Portugal
- being the quality symbol for the Chianti Classico Wine in Italy
- being the famous brand name le Coq sportive in France
- being an actual year definition in China, etc.
The Mahrers decided that the rooster would be a wonderful symbol for their new entreprise as well.
By the time when they opened their winery to the public they had two roosters named after Prince Charles as well as Prince Edward. This gave Prudence the idea to invite the real Prince Charles of Britain to her grand opening. Sure enough she sent him an invitation....He could not make it...what did you expect, BUT, he sent her a letter, apologizing for not being able to be there...now isnt that sweet....it can be viewed in their tasting room.
As you leave this friendly place, you are sure to take along some fine quality wines, perhaps some rooster lore and fresh eggs from the henhouse, as well as a truly memorable experience.
